When was FLUID ART born? it has become very popular in recent years, and especially in the last decade, but...

When was 'FLUID ART' born?

The 'Pittura Fluida', or better known as 'Fluid Art' or 'Acrylic Pouring', in recent years, and especially in the last decade, has depopulated all over the world and continues to arouse the interest of an ever wider audience of artists and not.

David Alfaro Siqueiros

This particular form of contemporary art was actually born almost a century ago when, in the 1930s, the Mexican artist David Alfaro Siqueiros (Camargo, December 29, 1896 - Cuernavaca, January 6, 1974) painter, muralist and soldier, experimented for the first time the technique of "Accidental Painting" by pouring liquid colors on a wooden panel and observing their behavior. The result was surprising and Siqueiros was totally fascinated by it so much that he wanted to understand the mechanisms of the movement of colors and the reason for their reactions.

he therefore began to study and experiment with different techniques and fluid consistencies. In 1936 Siqueiros organizes a workshop of this new technique in which the famous American painter Jackson Pollock, a pupil of Siqueiros, also participates.

In 2013, Roberto Zenit, a physics professor at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and art historian Sandra Zetina used fluid dynamics to study modern 'fluid art' techniques using paints similar to those used by Siqueiros.

Through various experiments, the two scholars discover that the various effects, shapes, reactions and appearance of the cells are the consequence of the imbalance between the densities of the paints poured onto the support. In fact, paints can have different densities depending on the pigments they contain. Each pigment has a specific weight and density depending on the derivation: for example the metallic ones are heavier while the vegetable ones are lighter.

Even today, many artists continue to experiment with the dynamics of fluid art with different means, tools and by mixing paints with different types of additives. Only through trial and error can one understand the behavior of fluids and those techniques can be more successful with the prepared mixture.
